Synths by K Brown (Free)

Okay...very interesting post you made there. As I said, I am not a programmer and I have no Flowstone knowledge either, just someone that likes to play with VST instruments in his free time. I also underestimated the job. It is much more tedious as I thought it should be and I did not really started yet...
It is very hard for me to find all the parameters in the FS project. The knobs are easy but the buttons and modulationselectors are very hard, almost impossible atm. On the other hand, those should be named too. It opens fantastic perspectifs afterwards when you midilearn them with for example a BCR2000. I believe for me there is also a big risk of doing anything wrong in the schematics without noticing. By naming a wrong box or by trying to fix the bad de-zippers.

Zitat:Your discussions with (our very own!) Knob Twiddler over at FS raise a few important issues - primarily Versioning.

Parameter naming at one-per-day looks do-able. If it's as straightforward as you suggest (and KT confirms) then with 'just' a couple more volunteers the whole bundle could be sorted by the time you have to return to the 9 to 5 grind of fine art. (I know a few programmers who paint as a hobby - topsy turvy world!)

But if the (re-)naming is done in FS (full or demo), any tweaks or bugfixes you need to make during the beta stage will have to be done with the last SM version - and the naming process will need to be addressed again.

Ok, thanx, I see what you mean now with versioning and the fact that presets cannot be made before a synth is "finished". I don't know where SM comes into play, are the plugins created in SM and imported in FS later? Anyway, we should make a good agreement as bluesmoke said because it is not a job to do twice  Angel.

Zitat:I'm guessing the ideal - probably what you were execting to happen - would be for a whole bunch of FS-ers to each 'adopt' one (or several) of these plugins, treat it as their own, and take it through to release status.

At the very least, I think you need to instigate some kind of system for checking-in and checking-out of projects - so everyone (or at least you) knows who's working on what at any given time.

+1 for that, does FS has such a big community?

So out of curiousity I started with the b6 plugin. The osc1 section to be precise.
My first problem is with the buttons for the waveforms. I can rename TRI and SAW but it doesn't work for SINE & SQUARE & LIN,EXP,PWM, the rename-window is just not there...
Their boxes call "Illum push button" in stead of "Selector push-button" btw.

For SAW and TRI I ran in another problem. I can automate them but when I make a track-envelope for them I cannot press them anymore on the synth. Which is working fine for the knobs like PW, I can still move those. It may be a reaper problem or my misunderstanding.

The issue with namings like 'Envelope-Knob' & 'Filter-Knob' is also there, till now I cannot remove it, only add the parameter names to it.

Here are the changes till now:

I made a small mistake, I deleted the rectangle around  LFO2. How do I correct that?

Following Bluesmoke's fabulous tip about using vstHost to inspect these parameter names, I was able to finally get to grips with this.  All the erroneous names were down to a wireless component inside the Presets submodule in each control trying to get info from a missing main module preset global (for that module) Preset naming pane.  Once I put that back into the larger modules (oscs, filts etc.) I was able to get it all sorted out and find and eliminate unused controls that were showing up on the list.

Doing all this with a6 will address KnobTwiddlers difficulties as well - I now get how this all works - thanks again to Bluesmoke!

Now it's just a matter my knocking these off as I have the time, and hopefully getting help from some other SM/FS users who are willing and able.

OB-2 should be very cleaned up now.

To some of the b6 issues specifically, I made things unecessarily difficult by adding other components inside those selectors, so when you look at the Properties Pane some of the data entry slots are overlapping with each other preventing form being changed.  One has to unlock the Properties pane and move things around so you see and use all enry slots that are there - sorry, big mess.  The names of the boxes themselves don't affect anything - they're just for the convenience of the bulider during construction.

As far as the box that got deleted, just copy/paste one from that button in the other oscillator.

Well, you sure had me fooled ... or maybe it's just hard to make a synth like this sound bad?

And thanks for making this topic a 'sticky' - more than 40 replies so far! (And none of them asking whether there's a Mac version, if it's 64 bit, or complaining that the GUI's too small ... I like it here!)

I don't know if k brown agrees, but after a half-hour or so playing around with this, I think it deserves a 'Release Candidate' status: the parameter mapping / automation and preset loading appears to be fixed, and I haven't noticed any other problems. I think it's stable enough to ask members to test it - 'to destruction', if they can ... and if they can't, call it a Version 1.0 release.

Would it be possible - or a good idea - to send out an email to all members, informing them of this release and inviting them to beta-test? Who knows - you may even find a few SM/FS users who'd like to volunteer their skills. Several of this board's members have already been getting involved - over at FS and elsewhere - and I think it's a project Music-Society can be very proud to be associated with.

I just finished an Automation cleanup of 'Matrix-Six1_myOsc'.  Sorry it's not the one with Matrix-6 emulated oscillators, but I like this oscillator design of mine own better!

Cool patch, Bam.  Nicely shows off the power of this kind of dual-voice architecture.  Surprising how few synths hard or soft that have this; the most famous ones probably Yamaha CS-80 and Oberheim Two-Voice.  The Obie had it over the CS-80 in having two Oscs per 'Voice' vs CS-80's single Osc. Of course nothing's ever outdone CS-80 in expressivness/performance controls (true poly-aftertouch, etc).

Just finished the automation fix for Zoomchak (Sonic Six emu):

For sure a good idea to invite the people for beta-testing.
Everyone will have his own favorite synth to play with and test it.
So this thread will be alive indefinitely. But I hope, some people will comply with a demand.
Here are many nameless passing travellers....  >Sad

Unfortunately, I am busy cos of soundprogramming for commercial and free dev´s VSTI´s.
But in a few weeks, I could have a deep look into some synths too.
BTW - no problems with patching in VST-Host (I´m always using for patching sounds).
I am using automation infrequently - only for some special synths.
Mostly I am happy, there are possibilites to change cutoff/LFO with the wheels.
For all other things I´m count on velocity or other internal "soundcontrols" to vary the sound by playing.

Too change all the parameters is an absolutely huge amount of work - so I take my hat off.....

But all this wonderful synths are worth it.....

I own wether Flowstone nor Synthmaker, cos of this I can´t help with any parameter-changes.
I´m no developer, but more a soundprogrammer.......
But IMO you can´t open FSM-files in Synthmaker, but logically vice-versa (Does Mr Spogg (DSP-Forum)
makes all the changes in those synths, cos of this). Flowstone is the successor of Synthmaker.

So thanks Mr K Brown for your incredible work, thanks to Knob and bluesmoke
for your further efforts.....  :top2

So much to say, so little time to say it - I'll post again later.
(There's stuff I want to say to kb and KT - please bear with me!)

For now, just an observation from another (very) few minutes (<10!) with OB-2.
Can someone please check/verify/clarify ...

In the hardware OB-1, in Sync mode VCO2 was slaved to VCO1 - i.e. VCO1 controlled the pitch.
This relationship is reversed in OB-2 (unless I'm doing something wrong ... it happens! it happens!!).

Absolutely NOT a problem!

CROSSMOD is an addition/enhancement of the software (?) - and very much appreciated!

However: both Sync and X-mod appear to only affect the FUND(amental) - not the OCT ('sub') oscillator of VCO1.
Is this the intended behaviour - or is there a missing connection somewhere?

(Just found an OB-1 manual [in English] if anyone's interested: courtesy Gearslutz )

[**EDIT**]

Just to confuse things a little more (sorry!)...
With the output of VCO2 off, CROSSMOD still affects VCO1 - but only with SYNC activated.
Again - is this intentional?
(I have absolutely no idea what I would consider 'expected' behaviour! I tend to try and find out what a synth actually does - then expect it to do that.)

[**EDIT 2**]

(... whie I'm making a nuisance of myself...)

VIBR (PB 'MOD' mode): S/H not connected.

Most of these bugs were down to Noise getting disconnected from a couple of things.  Sync was operating inversely.  Cross-mod not an enhancement - was on the hardware, though like most old Oberheim manuals no specifics about exactly what it did. I implimented it with a sine from osc 2 modulating the phase of ocs 1 (only really sounds musically useful with Tri selected in osc 1).

Not sure whether sync affected the sub osc on OB-1; manual doesn't say.  It sounded OK, so I made it so.

Added a feature not on the Two Voice - Voice #1's oscsillators can be routed to Voice #2's filter, for putting a big 4-osc sound through a single filter.

Like the SEM-Plus Eurorack module, I added Saw to the LFOs.

I also added the OB-1 manual to this folder.

Working now on automation fix for tableBlend, though I'm not going to do the oscs till Spogg's back from vacation, in case he'd be willing to share his wave-sequencing for it.

Cheers,
k brown

Hey folks -

Re-download OB-2 (same folder as link in previous post) - it's been rather extensively updated with new features; more borrowed from the may-never-happen SEM Plus Eurorack.

BAM:  These don't load; are you sure you're using the latest version that's in the OB-2b folder?

The 'b' is very important - I should probably take the other one out of there to avoid confusion.

Automation fix for tableBlend (rough approximatin of Prophet 12).  Still no wave-sequencing or Prophet VS wavetables, just an assortment of wavetables collected from SM over the years.  Hoping someone at Flowstone can help with the wave-sequencing and maybe someone has a source for the VS wavetables.

At the suggestion of cakebox over at DSP Robotics forum, the next automation cleanup is SystemOne D - a 'semulation' of a small Buchla modular system with drop-down patching instead of virtual patch-cords.  No claim of it's sounding like a Buchla, but still fun to play in a similar structure.  Maybe someone at DSP R will help out with a stab at vactrol simulation.

Just managed to squeeze one more out tonight - 80-vox, the very incomplete emulation of Yamaha CS-80.  Just the basic synth voice (hence the name), no ribbon controller, effects, etc.  Main deviation from CS-80's overall structure is the swapping out the Ring Modulator for a second LFO, which it really needed.  Also more waveforms that can cross-fade, VCO I and II can FM each other, etc.
It does respond to aftertouch; I don't know how well - I don't have an aftertouch controller.

Inspired by reading about Don Buchla, I couldn't resist going ahead with theMusicWeasel even though it only has the lame stepLFO; no real sequencer - hoping someone at Flowstone will help with that. In the mean time, it's still an interesting peek into the mind of Buchla for free!
